Look for IFs Results in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization in July!
The International Futures team is pleased to announce that results from the third Patterns of Potential Human Progress volume, Improving Global Health, will be published by the World Health Organization in July. The article will report that the global burden from communicable diseases will decline over the next 50 years, while impact from noncommunicable diseases and injuries will increase. Overall improvements in global heath in an optimistic scenario lead to an increase of GDP of 20%, with greatest improvement occurring in South Asia. The paper is authored by Barry B. Hughes, Randall Kuhn, Cecilia M. Peterson, Dale S. Rothman, Jose R. Solorzano, Colin D. Mathers and Janet R. Dickson.
IFs Team Member Presents at the FTA Conference Hosted by the European Commission
Jonathan D. Moyer represented the IFs team at the 4th annual Future-Oriented Technology Analysis Conference, presenting a paper co-authored with Barry B. Hughes and Dale S. Rothman and chairing a panel. The event was hosted by the European Commission Joint Research Center Institute for Prospective Technological Studies and the Knowledge for Growth Unit in Seville, Spain on May 11-13.
Britt Reiersgord Presents Paper on Health Prevention in India
Britt Reiersgord, a Pardee Center Research Assistant and graduating student in the Korbel School's Global Health Affairs program, presented original research at the Unite for Sight Global Health and innovation Conference held at Yale University in April. Her presentation was entitled "Platforms for Sustainable Health Systems in New Delhi, India" and summarized her work last summer in South Asia. Britt's research focuses on developing grassroots approaches to spreading information about preventable diseases through information gathering and dissemination.
Research Assistant Henock Lidetu Interns in Tanzania this Summer
Pardee Center Research Assistant Henock Lidetu will spend 10 weeks working with Innovations for Poverty Action in Tanzania this summer. Henock will conduct research on informal finance services in East Africa. The internship will involve travels to a range of sites, including Zanzibar.
Dr. Kirk Smith Discusses Environment and Solid Fuel Use
The Pardee Center for International Futures, along with the Global Health Affairs Program at the Korbel School, was proud to welcome Dr. Kirk Smith in mid-April to discuss "The Environmental Health Risks Transition Revisited: Cookstoves, Cities and Climate." Dr. Smith is a Professor of Global Environmental Health at UC Berkeley. His presentation was followed by lunch at the Pardee Center and a discussion of IFs modeling capabilities related to global health, specifically those developed in the third Patterns of Potential Human Progress volume.
Lunch with Dr. Robert Repetto
The Korbel School recently welcomed Dr. Robert Repetto to discuss his new book, America’s Climate Problem: The Way Forward. Dr. Repetto is a Senior Fellow at the United Nations Foundation and formerly a professor at Yale University. Dr. Repetto’s presentation was followed by lunch and further discussion at the Pardee Center.
Jonathan D. Moyer Presents at Patuxent Defense Forum
The Patuxent Defense Forum is a conference held for academics, military officers, government employees and defense contractors at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Jonathan presented on Africa 2050, a recent publication co-authored between the Pardee Center and the Institute for Security Studies.
Research Assistant McLennan Wins Prestigious Award!
Congratulations to Patrick G. McLennan, a research assistant at the Pardee Center, for being named a 2011 David L. Boren Fellow with the National Security Education Program. As part of his fellowship he plans to work with our partner in South Africa, the Institute for Security Studies, to research state fragility and economic growth. We are all excited to further and deepen the collaboration between our centers!
Tragic Loss of Henri “Bossie” Boshoff
The Pardee Center for International Futures extends its most sincere condolences to our friends at the Institute for Security Studies as they grieve for the tragic loss of Henri "Bossie" Boshoff. Bossie was the head of the Peace Missions Programme at the ISS and was a widely respected authority on the security situation throughout the continent. Staff at the Pardee Center had the privilege of working with Bossie, most recently at the Patuxent Defense Forum in Maryland.
